Five Points Public Meeting: Verbatim Comments

Wednesday, July 13, 2005

18th St.
Did not poll trucking companies to find out what routes they are using
Online maps show 18th St. as a trucking route

18th St.
West of intersection in the Pio Decimo neighborhood
TDOT should consider deliveries, fire, other emergencies
We should return to the 1970s design

18th St.
Neighborhood Association rep said traffic is worse in the area

18th St.
Look at this 2000 map of the area
I'm against the closure
There are 15 businesses that pay taxes
Protect the small businesses, we don't want them to suffer because of the closure

18th St.
Don't close it
There is no traffic there, it's a big lie
We can't deter mass transit

18th St.
Don't close it
Don't impact the needs of the residents
There are schools, kids, parents, elderly, emergency vehicles that need to use this route
I am thrilled with the idea of 2-way traffic, however

18th St.
The closure is foisted upon us
Protect the businesses and their interests
Many of us have lived there all our lives
The City Council must reconsider the closure and abandon the plan
Many of the amenities provided in the plan are needed, but not the closure of 18th St.
Residents have many memories of the area and it's historic

18th St.
(Property owner/lifelong resident)
Does not need to be closed
But I'm all for the other plans
The 2-way is a good idea
I don't see heavy trucking in the area

18th St.
(Businessman)
Must keep the commercial viability and the neighborhoods
2-way is needed
Deter truckers on 18th St. with roundabouts, signage, and fines

18th St.
(Lifelong resident)
18th St. connects neighborhoods, do NOT change it
The new design with the closure is an obstacle

18th St.
I'm for the 2-way traffic
Q. Why can't we have 4 lanes all the way through?
Glock: We are financially limited and the width of the street won't allow 4 lanes in some areas

18th St.
Q. Can we have 4 lanes on Stone, south of Congress?
Glock: 2.5 blocks south of Broadway the 4 lane ends

18th St.
We don't want to lose parking on Stone near the cathedral

18th St.
There is heavy truck traffic in the area and the 3-Ton Limit sign is ignored
18th St. is not a barrier to emergency vehicles

18th St.
The project has been approved by the public in the past
A bridge under the freeway is planned for the trucks
If 18th St. is not closed, it could become a bypass and we don't want it to become a bypass

(TDOT added the comment that the pedestrian crossings will remain)

18th St.
I'm a lifelong resident
Don't close it
Don't take the church parking
Drivers would then use barrio streets instead, in residential areas
The small park should be improved (Caesar Chavez)
I don't like the City of Tucson pitting the barrios against the neighborhoods

18th St.
Trucks are back even with the roundabouts
4-way light at 18th and Park
Don't consider in a vacuum
Need to keep the historic nature
Don't kill off the small businesses

18th St.
I'm for the project
We should continue with the project and then make minor changes later, if necessary
Let's not lose this chance to go forward

18th St.
I oppose the closure
This has the only safe pedestrian crossings
Look at National City, this is an example of success
It's discriminatory to close 18th St.

18th St.
The freeway construction will start soon and the overflow traffic will spill into the neighborhoods
We must continue the project now because it will cost more later
18th St. and Park is ready for a traffic light
We must consider the entire area when we plan this

18th St.
(3-year resident)
Q. Where will the traffic go if 18th St. is closed off?
Glock: It is not realistic to think that traffic will instead use only 22nd St. and Broadway. They will use 19th St. and other avenues.
Q. Did the engineers study and plan for the traffic flow?
Glock: They didn't study the traffic flow in detail.

18th St.
I see mainly City of Tucson vehicles along this route
Signage on the east side of 18th St. may help ease the traffic. Enforce the signs

18th St.
(Business owner)
I see no heavy traffic
To get to the southeast side of the city, drivers take 18th St. instead of 22nd
18th St. funnels traffic

18th St.
I favor the project in general
The design will preserve the neighborhoods
South 6th Ave has many speeders, we need to slow traffic there

18th St.
Closure will create ghetto enclaves
There is no traffic on 18th St.
Now we can turn east and west on 18th St.

18th St.
I'm a daily user of the 18th St. intersection and I hate to see it blocked off
Is there a compromise solution?

18th St.
You could block off 18th at 2nd Avenue instead of the proposed plan

18th St.
We should call the trucking companies and ask about the routes they use
The train is worse!
22nd to 6th is a good truck route
Enforce the no trucks restriction on 18th St.

18th St.
I oppose the closing of the intersection because it's used daily by families and we must retain accessibility for them

18th St.
Don't block of 18th St.
I'm a resident and I do not see trucks on 18th St.
Train tracks and speed bumps help to slow traffic

18th St.
Don't close it
Cut down the scale of this project
Steel and concrete are at an all-time high price right now
